I. ABOUT AFRIKA NUNYA INSTITUTE
Afrika Nunya is a pan-African research center dedicated to transforming African societies through the creation and mobilization of knowledge for decision-making processes. The institute fosters dialogue, idea exchange, and knowledge dissemination to address the continent’s challenges and its diaspora, offering evidence-based solutions and orientations.
Located in Lomé, Togo, Afrika Nunya focuses on interdisciplinary research in peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights. The Institute collaborates with African academics and practitioners to generate and share data and analyses with policymakers, contributing to well-informed public policies. Key to its mission is creating spaces for internal dialogue among Africans to prevent conflict and build trust at national, regional, and continental levels.
Focus Areas
Afrika Nunya’s activities currently center around three primary areas:
1. Peace and Security
- Discussing and creating sustainable and inclusive democratic models.
- Establishing Africa-specific frameworks for peace consolidation.
- Analyzing regional mechanisms for peace and security promotion, conflict prevention, and management.
2. Sustainable Development
- Empowering youth through knowledge exchange, skills development, and intra-African cooperation in trade, technology, sociology, and economic development.
- Promoting women’s leadership in climate action.
- Advocating for climate justice.
- Exploring business’s role in fostering a circular economy in Africa.
3. Human Rights
- Connecting human rights, development, peace, and security through climate and environmental protection.
- Assisting national governments in strengthening judicial systems.
II. JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Research Assistant (Six-month renewable internship)
This role is suited for young Africans with an interest in research and policy careers.
Essential Functions:
- Conduct comprehensive research and analysis on issues related to Afrika Nunya’s focus areas.
- Assist in preparing policy briefs, reports, and research papers for conferences and publications.
- Collaborate with researchers on interdisciplinary projects.
- Engage with stakeholders (government agencies, NGOs, and academic institutions) for data collection.
- Participate in internal brainstorming, workshops, and seminars.
- Manage work plans to meet program goals and implement improvement strategies.
- Provide content for blogs, social media, and the Institute’s website.
- Develop fundraising initiatives, identify funding sources, and submit grant proposals.
- Help organize conferences, roundtables, and webinars.
- Assist in setting up data collection and management systems.
Qualifications:
- A postgraduate degree and at least one year of research-related experience in peace and security, international relations, youth employment, human rights, climate change, or related fields.
- Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into concise reports.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Capability to research issues related to Africa.
- Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced, diverse team environment.
- Fluency in English is mandatory; French proficiency is an asset.
- Strong computer skills, especially in MS Office, Excel, and research databases.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and build relationships.
- High personal energy, positive attitude, sense of humor and ability to work in a team
environment are essential. - Experience of living or working abroad is an advantage.
- This position is based in Lome and may require domestic and/or international travel.
