The application process for a TSC number, the prerequisite to practice teaching in either public or private schools, requires successive compilation of some steps. The TSC number comes in handy for the registration process into the profession and forms part of the tracking and management of the teachers’ records.
The steps on how to apply for a TSC number are described hereunder.
1. Ensure You Meet the Minimum Requirements
Before you apply for a TSC number, you should meet the following minimum qualifications:
Education Qualification:
For primary school teachers, a P1 Certificate or equivalent is needed.
For secondary school teachers, a Bachelor of Education, B.Ed., degree, or a degree with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, PGDE.
Age: You must be 21 years and above to apply for a TSC number.
Citizenship of Kenya: You must be a Kenyan to apply.
Good Conduct: You have to provide a Police Certificate of Good Conduct.
Medical Fitness: A medical certificate issued by a recognized health facility certifying you fit to teach.
2. Meet the Documents Requirement
Get the following documents before accessing the application:
- National Identification Card or valid Passport.
- Educational Certificates, such as KCSE certificate, P1 Certificate and Degree Certificate.
- Professional Certificate.
- Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
- Passport-size photographs-two.
- Proof of Identity for children or dependents where one is joining the family medical scheme with National ID or Birth Certificate.
3. Account Creation on TSC Portal
Application of the TSC number is based on online services offered by the TSC, where: You log on to the official website, the TSC Portal:
Click on the “TSC Registration” tab on the homepage or directly on the section for registration. Create your account on the portal by filling in your information: full names, ID number, email address, and mobile phone number.
A confirmation email will be sent to you with your account details, including a username and password.
4. Apply for the TSC No.
Log in to your TSC Portal Account using your credentials. Click on the TSC Registration Section.
Fill in the Online Application Form with:
- Personal details
- Education qualifications
- Experience of teaching
- Name of the institution where you took your training as a teacher.
Scan Documents and Attach:
Scanned copies of certificates, ID card, good conduct certificate, and passport-size photos.
Payment of Application Fee:
There may be a small application fee. You can pay that online using any of the options provided for payment in the portal.
5. Form Submission
Fill in the application form and attach the required documents to complete your application.
You will be notified of receipt and that your application is being processed.
6. Verification Process
The TSC will verify the application against the submitted documents.
If all the documents are accurate and meet the TSC requirements, it will approve your application. The TSC may contact you when some information is not available or is not clearly presented.
7. Get Your TSC Number
Upon successful processing of your application and subsequent approval, you will be given your TSC number.
You will be allowed to download your TSC certificate and number from the TSC portal for use in your registration as a professional teacher in Kenya.
8. Registration and Teacher Profile
After acquiring your TSC number, it is expected that you will fill in your profile and update your information from time to time on the TSC portal.
